Indonesia's financial regulator reported on 5 October 2026 that crypto transaction value rose 12.87% in August 2026 from July. The headline hides a bigger story: the same data put August 2026 spot volume at Rp23.16 trillion, 48.8% below the Rp45.21 trillion recorded in August 2025, while consumer accounts grew 28.4% over the same twelve months.

That gap, more accounts but roughly 60% less money per account, is the detail most coverage of the monthly release skips. As of 6 October 2026, 36 days before Web3 Week Asia opens in Jakarta on 11-12 November 2026, it is the clearest data-based picture of where the Indonesia crypto market stands.

Spot volume. Rp23.16 trillion in August 2026, up 12.87% from Rp20.52 trillion in July 2026, according to OJK data reported on 5 October 2026.

Accounts. 23.21 million consumer accounts in August 2026, up 1.23% in a month and up 28.4% from 18.08 million in August 2025.

Year on year. August 2026 volume is 48.8% below August 2025. January-August 2026 volume of Rp194.28 trillion is 39.6% below the roughly Rp321.7 trillion of January-August 2025 (derived).

Derivatives. Rp4.56 trillion in August 2026, up 33.76% from Rp3.41 trillion in July 2026, equal to about 19.7% of spot volume.

Licensed operators. 28 licensed digital asset traders, plus 2 exchanges, 2 clearing institutions and 2 custodians, as reported from OJK's July and August releases.

What the 12.87% rise actually measures

The monthly rise starts from a weak base. July 2026 fell 28.2% from June's Rp28.58 trillion, so August's Rp23.16 trillion is still 19.0% below June. It is also 4.6% below the January-August monthly average of Rp24.29 trillion (Rp194.28 trillion divided by eight).

Read as a series, the pattern is a plateau with one spike. March to May 2026 came in at Rp22.24 trillion, Rp22.98 trillion and Rp23.01 trillion; June jumped to Rp28.58 trillion; July dropped to Rp20.52 trillion; August returned to Rp23.16 trillion. August sits inside the March-May band. The cross-check holds: January-April spot volume of Rp99.01 trillion plus May-August of Rp95.27 trillion equals the Rp194.28 trillion cumulative figure.

Why it matters: a rebound from an unusually weak month is not a break in trend. The data show a market that has traded in a narrow range for six months, not one that has started to grow again.

More accounts, less money per account

Consumer accounts rose in each month for which figures were reported: 22.69 million in June, 22.93 million in July and 23.21 million in August 2026. Over twelve months the increase is 5.13 million accounts, or 28.4%.

Spot volume moved the other way. Dividing monthly volume by accounts gives about Rp998,000 per account in August 2026, against about Rp2.50 million in August 2025, a fall of roughly 60%. This is a derived average, not an OJK statistic.

OJK's Adi Budiarso attributed the July decline to "dynamics and fluctuations in transaction value" and said consumer trust remains intact. That is a description of the pattern, not an explanation of it.

Derivatives are growing faster than spot

Digital asset derivatives reached Rp4.56 trillion in August 2026, a 33.76% monthly rise, against 12.87% for spot. Their size relative to spot went from about 16.6% in July (Rp3.41 trillion against Rp20.52 trillion) to about 19.7% in August.

According to Bisnis, cumulative derivatives volume for January-August 2026 was Rp37.09 trillion; this figure comes from one outlet and is attributed rather than confirmed. One month of faster derivatives growth is not yet a shift in market structure.

The honest counterweight

Accounts are not active traders. OJK reads account growth as consumer trust, but accounts count registrations. The releases reviewed do not say how many accounts traded in a given month, so the per-account figure understates activity per active user by an unknown amount.

The cause of the decline is not established. OJK points to market dynamics. No source reviewed ties the year-on-year fall to prices, tax treatment, regulation or users moving to other platforms, and this article does not either.

One month proves little. Monthly swings in 2026 were +24.2% in June, -28.2% in July and +12.87% in August, all far larger than the 1.23% monthly growth in accounts. A single release cannot separate a trend from noise.

Indonesia crypto: what the licensing data adds

The supply side keeps widening even as volume per account compresses. OJK counts 28 licensed digital asset traders, with two exchanges, two clearing institutions and two custodians in the licensed infrastructure, according to Detik's report on the July release.

According to CNBC Indonesia, OJK's regulatory sandbox had four active participants and seven graduates as of the August release, with approved business models that include gold tokenization, stablecoin issuance and crypto fund management. This detail comes from one outlet. If confirmed, it shows that the pipeline for new regulated products is moving independently of monthly trading volume.

For exchanges, custodians and investors, the practical reading is that Indonesia has a large registered user base and a mature licensing structure, while the trading volume per user is well below its level a year ago.

Web3 Week Asia 2026: blockchain event in Jakarta, 11-12 November

Web3 Week Asia is a crypto and blockchain event held in Jakarta on 11-12 November 2026, a Wednesday and Thursday. According to the official programme, it has four tracks: Investor Meetups, Alpha Callers, Web3 Entrepreneur and Indonesia Crypto Outlook 2026. The venue listed is the Grand Ballroom at Kuningan City.

The data in this article is the kind of question the Indonesia Crypto Outlook 2026 track is designed to examine: what a large account base, a licensed market structure and lower volume per user mean for operators and investors. The 2026 speaker line-up has not been announced yet.

The organisers state that the 2025 edition drew more than 5,000 participants, over 100 speakers and more than 200 companies from more than 10 countries. OJK's September data, if the recent release pattern of 4 August, 7 September and 5 October holds, should arrive in early November, shortly before the event.

August 2026 figures (spot Rp23.16 trillion, derivatives Rp4.56 trillion, 23.21 million accounts, +12.87%, +33.76%, +1.23%) are from OJK's 5 October 2026 press conference as reported by CNBC Indonesia, Bisnis, Antara and Media Indonesia. July 2026 figures (Rp20.52 trillion, 22.93 million accounts, -28.2%, OJK quote) are from OJK's 7 September 2026 briefing as reported by Detik and Investortrust. June 2026 (Rp28.58 trillion, 22.69 million accounts) is from Antara, reporting OJK's 4 August 2026 meeting. March-May 2026 figures (Rp22.24 trillion, Rp22.98 trillion, Rp23.01 trillion) and January-April cumulative (Rp99.01 trillion) are from Bareksa, Infobank, Kontan and Bisnis. 2025 figures (August Rp45.21 trillion, 18.08 million accounts, January-September Rp360.3 trillion, September Rp38.64 trillion) are from OJK as reported by Detik and Bisnis on 9 October 2025. Event details are from the official Web3 Week Asia site as of 2 October 2026.

Methodology: Year-on-year changes are computed as August 2026 divided by August 2025 minus one (23.16 / 45.21 = -48.8%; 23.21 / 18.08 = +28.4%). January-August 2025 volume is derived as the January-September 2025 total (Rp360.3 trillion) minus September 2025 (Rp38.64 trillion), which is Rp321.66 trillion. Per-account volume is monthly spot value divided by month-end consumer accounts and is not an OJK figure. The monthly series was cross-checked: Rp99.01 trillion (January-April) plus May to August values equals the Rp194.28 trillion January-August total. Bitcoin and other price data were excluded because no source reviewed links price to these volumes. The OJK market capitalisation figure was excluded because only one source was retrieved.
